101, of Girard, passed away Saturday morning, September 28, 2013 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL.
Melvin was born on June 30, 1912 to James and Ruby (Jones) Walker in Divernon, IL. On April 3, 1937 Melvin married Cora Mae Margaret Allen at her parents home in rural Girard and she preceded him in death on June 15, 2001.
Melvin was a farmer in the Girard area, retiring in 1978, as well as the previous owner of Girard Wellworth Store. He was an active member of the Girard United Methodist Church, serving on the church council, building committee, usher and trustee. Melvin was an avid softball player. He and his wife Margaret belonged to the Polka Club which met once a month at the KC in Riverton and they went dancing in Schramm City every Friday night. Since 1937 Melvin was a long time fan of the Chicago Cubs.
Melvin is survived by his son, Donald (Barbara) Walker of Butler, IL; 3 daughters, Marjorie Walker of Springfield, IL, Margaret (Ray) Serati of Springfield, IL and Dorothy (Fred) Fillback of Batchtown, IL; 10 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Gene Allen of Girard and several nieces and nephews.
Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; parents, James and Ruby Walker; sisters, Loretta Wade and Pauline Hutton; brother, Larry Walker and grandsons, Randall Walker and Stacy Reynolds. Funeral Information
Visitation will be held Tuesday morning, October 1, 2013 from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm at the Girard United Methodist Church with funeral services following at 2:00 pm. Rev. Mary Alice Cunningham and Chaplin Marty Nagel will be officiating.
Burial will follow in Girard Cemetery Donations Information
