George Marshall Stevens, Jr. 74, of Springfield, formerly of Girard, Illinois, died Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana, IL. He was born Saturday, January 23, 1937 in East Alton, Illinois, the Son of the late George M. Stevens, Sr. and the late Eldo Nora (Gregory) Stevens. He married Loretta B. Wells in the state of Virginia in 1956. She preceded him in death on February 3, 1977. George served his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He and his wife, Loretta, moved to the Girard area in 1952. George was a coal miner at the Farmersville Mine. Later he was a part-time Police Officer for the city of Girard. He also was on the Girard Fire Department. He loved woodworking and repairing and painting cars. George loved to be outdoors, and could always be seen walking around town. Survivors: Son, Larry Stevens of Springfield, Daughter, Deborah Branson (Gerald) of Springfield, Son, Bob Stevens (Jenny) of Broken Arrow, OK, Daughter, Cathy Ambrose of Manito, IL, 11 Grandchildren, 6 Great-Grandchildren, Sister, Wilma Emmons (Norman) of Carlinville, 3 Nieces and 2 Nephews. He was preceded in death by Grandson: Chris Davis, 2 Great-Grandchildren, and 1 Sister: Juanita Hart. Funeral Information Visitation: 1:00 to 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, February 8 at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Girard, IL. Services: 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home with Pastor Stephen Wolfe officiating. Burial: Girard Cemetery , where military rites will be conducted.
