Obituary of Audrey Smith

Audrey Smith 88, of Auburn, formerly of Girard, passed away Thursday morning, January 30, 2014 at Auburn Nursing and Rehabilitation in Auburn, IL. Audrey was born on December 30, 1925 to Harry and Bertha (Rollinson) Jarvis in Airedale Yorkshire, England. She left school at age 14 to work in a clothing factory, sewing basket factory, Seg factory and served 3 years in the Women's Land Army during WWII in England. She married Wilbur Joseph Smith on February 28, 1945 in Blechler, England. She then emigrated to the United States to join her husband in Girard in April 1946 aboard Queen Mary along with 2500 war brides from Southawpton to New York. Audrey worked as a bookkeeper for Payne Pontiac-Buick for several years, then worked for the Illinois State Police and Illinois Department of Public Aid until her retirement in 1987. Audrey was a den mother for the Cub Scouts and assistant Girl Scout Leader, as well as a member of the Macoupin County Historical Society. She was also the past president of the Girard Senior Citizens, member of Girard Baptist Church and a member of the HCE of Macoupin county. Audrey is survived by her daughter, Katherine Talkington of Girard; 3 sons, David (Fran) Smith of Yukon, OK, Brian (Sheila) Smith of Springfield, IL and Geoffrey (Karen) Smith of Richmond, TX; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 6 step great grandchildren; 2 step great-great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mildred Twigger of Brighton, England and Jean Blakestone of Airedale England; 3 brothers, Geoffrey (Elsie) Jarvis, Brian Jarvis and David Jarvis all of Airdale, England, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Joyce Widowson and a brother, Stanley Jarvis. Funeral Information A memorial visitation will be held on Monday, February 3, 2014 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Girard. Private graveside services will be held at a later date in Girard Cemetery.
