Bernice (Tackenburg) Thompson 92, of Girard, passed away Sunday evening, October 16, 2011 at the Sunrise Manor in Virden. Bernice was born in Pekin, IL on July 29, 1919 the daughter of Herman Henry and Harriet (Dixon) Tackenburg. Bernice graduated school from Pekin High School in Pekin, IL and St. Francis School of Nursing in Peoria. Bernice joined the Army in 1943 and became a 1st Lieutenant in the Nursing Corp during W.W. II and was a surgical nurse during the European Theater. She was awarded the Bronze Star. After the service Bernice married Clyde Thompson on September 23, 1947 in Springfield, IL. He passed away May 5, 1980. Bernice was employed in the office of Dr. H.A. Finney, Girard, and later served as the Director of Nursing at Sunrise Manor in Virden. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Virden. Bernice was a devout Catholic, a dedicated nurse, a lover of animals and fan of jazz. She leaves her beloved cat, Kelly. She was an active member of the Springfield Kennel Club. Bernice is survived by her 2 nephews - Stephen Tackenburg, Paul Tackenburg; and sister-in-law, Leonette Tackenburg of Genoa, IL. She was preceded in death by parents, husband, Sisters Jean Russell and Doris Sellers and Brother Charles Tackenburg. Funeral Information Visitation will be held Friday, October 21, 2011 11:00 am - 12:00 pm at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Girard, IL. Graveside service will be held on Friday, October 21, 2011, 1:00 PM at the Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, with military honors. Burial will take place next to her husband in the Camp Butler National Cemetery. Donations Information Memorials are suggested to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the Adopt-A-Pet in Benld.
