Obituary of Deborah "Debbie" C. Hughes

Deborah "Debbie" C. Hughes, age 74, of Carlinville, IL, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2025, at Addington Place in Edwardsville, IL. Debbie was born, in St. Louis, MO, a daughter of Fred and Margie (McIlvain) Schuman. She married Mervyn L. "Merv" Hughes on April 24, 1971, in Carlinville United Methodist Church. Debbie had several jobs over a period of time in Carlinville. She started at F&M Bank, where she was a teller and got to know everybody in town. She then went to Prairie Farms and worked several more years in different areas and made many friends there. Her final job was working at the courthouse as an administrative assistant. That is where she retired from shortly after her husband passed away. After that she worked part time in housekeeping at the hospital to keep her busy and loved it. She loved to drive around in her car all day, just listening to music and feeling the sun on her face. She was well known by everyone as a sweet, kind person and willing to help anyone she could. Her contagious smile will always be remembered. Debbie was preceded in death by her parents, husband; Mervyn L. "Merv" Hughes, and brother; Fred Schuman. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Burial will be in Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Carlinville, IL Debbie is survived by her daughter, Kelly (Mike) Emmons of Carlinville, IL, son, Curt (Fiance Jennifer Gilmer) Hughes of Carlinville, IL, grandchildren; Katerina, Kristofer and Konnor Emmons, Kelsea Miller, and Samantha Hughes, six great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
